Why we started Golconda Labs

The Koh-i-Noor. The Hope. The Regent. The Daria-i-Noor. For four centuries, the alluvial mines of Golconda — near modern Hyderabad — produced the finest diamonds the world had ever seen. They sat on the crowns of emperors. They travelled through dynasties. They became legend.

The mines are exhausted now. But the diamonds remain — in museums, in vaults, in history books. The name Golconda still means one thing in our world: the purest water, the truest brilliance.

The technology to grow diamonds in a laboratory has existed for decades. In the last five years, it has reached a quality and a price point that finally makes sense for the Indian woman who knows her diamonds.

Same carbon. Same lattice. Same fire. Same IGI certificate. A 2-carat lab grown solitaire, set in 18K gold, for what 0.5 carats of mined diamond would have cost you. That is the arithmetic that started this company.

We are a small team in Agra. Between us, three decades in the jewellery trade — long enough to remember when every piece was made by hand, in a workshop, by a karigar you knew. We wanted to make jewellery the same way again.

Our diamonds are grown in Surat, the world's diamond capital, at facilities certified by the International Gemmological Institute. Every stone you order arrives with its own IGI certificate — the same grade report that accompanies a mined diamond.

The settings are crafted in our workshop in Agra — 18K BIS-hallmarked gold, set by hand, finished with care. Ten days from confirmation to your door.
